July 2017: Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson announced the appointment of Ambassador Kurt Volker to serve as the United States Special Representative for Ukraine negotiations. Picture shows him (arm outstretched) visiting the front line, with senior Ukrainian military officers.
Ambassador Volker has been holding regular meetings with Ukraine and the other members of the Normandy Format: Russia, Germany, and France. He’s certainly adopting a no-nonsense approach, stating openly that he believes Russia is occupying & fully controlling parts of Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
This refreshingly hard stance is just what’s needed and will ultimately benefit all sides. With over 10,000 people known to have died and unknown thousands of Russian soldiers and mercenaries killed, it’s time to move beyond the normal political niceties and instead, tell it like it is. This week has seen Volker holding extensive talks in Ukraine and is soon due to visit Dubai, for further talks with Russian officials. I’ll keep you posted on these peace talks.
