August 20th – 27th.

During the last week, Russia’s occupation forces launched over 200 firing attacks. Predictably, on both Ukraine’s National Flag Day and Independence Day, they shelled multiple locations along the front line. On the morning of August 23, under cover of artillery and mortar fire, Russian forces attacked the leading Ukrainian positions around the village of Krymske. Their aim was the capture of  forward observation posts positioned along the Bakhmut highway. After some 5 hours of fighting, Ukrainian reserve units managed to repel this large scale attack. It’s reported enemy casualties amounted to 12 killed & 17 wounded. Ukraine losses were 4 killed and 7 wounded.

Krymske is in Ukraine’s Luhansk Oblast (province). The village sits on the bank of the River Siverskyi Donets. With the river providing a natural defensive barrier, the capture of the village by Russia would be advantageous.

Situation Map for Aug 27th. Details firing attacks by Russian forces over the last 24 hours. As you can see, Luhansk Oblast saw the heaviest shelling, along with villages down on the south coast around the city of Mariupol.
