A memorandum of understanding between the governments of Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine has been signed. This agreement is to provide financial support for prosecuting the perpetrators of the downing of flight MH17.
On July 17th 2014, a Russian army BUK missile launcher downed the plane, resulting in the tragic loss of 298 lives, including 80 children.
“The Signatories arrange to jointly finance the proceedings connected with the prosecution in the Netherlands of those suspected of downing flight MH17 in light of the international nature of the tragedy and the goal of capturing the harm done to all victims and making the legal proceedings as accessible as possible to all next of kin of the victims.
The Government of Australia, the Government of Belgium, the Government of Malaysia, the Government of the Netherlands and the Government of Ukraine (“the Signatories”) have jointly recognized, after careful consideration of the available options, that prosecuting the perpetrators of the downing of flight MH17 in the Netherlands would be the most viable prosecution mechanism.”
