Thoughts on Our Next Campaign Day

On July 30th there was a remarkably positive response to our #CrimeaIsUkraine Campaign Day. All the more remarkable as I only called it a week earlier. On August 2nd, Google showed an epic 185,000 hashtag results, this up from July 30th when the total stood at a modest 38,400. This means on July 30th & following two days, at least 146,600 #CrimeaIsUkraine posts were made.

Understandably some people will say so what?
A hashtag wont stop Russia occupying Crimea. This criticism is valid but misses the point. Our campaigns are a platform for people to focus attention on Russia’s illegal actions, to draw attention to its on-going human rights abuses perpetrated by the Kremlin. A hashtag can become an information hub, a practical means by which anyone can voice their support for Ukraine & used to counter Russia’s fake news narrative.

We first have to show we care before claiming the world doesn’t. 
Today we live in an interconnected world with breaking stories grabbing the worlds attention everyday – the tragic explosion in Beirut being a case in point. After 6 years, Russia’s occupation of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine has fallen out of the news. Therefore to compete for newsworthy space, we have to make our campaigns big enough to likewise grab the worlds media, politicians and governments attention – to get them reporting, joining in & speaking out against Russia’s actions.

So what next?
Sometime soon we’ll run another #CrimeaIsUkraine Campaign Day. I would like this one to focus on Russia’s on-going persecution of Ukrainians, including the Crimean Tatars. I’m also keen to run campaigns highlighting Russia’s occupation of eastern Ukraine. To enable our second focus on Crimea to become even bigger, much work has to be done to create readily accessible info on Russia’s political prisoners which people can use on the day.

Moving onto eastern Ukraine, a strong contender for the next Campaign Day is one zeroing in on the 6 years worth of ammo Russia’s sent into Ukraine. I like the idea of us revealing how Russia’s sole political aim is to continue the fighting by funding a war in Europe. Plenty of evidence proving Russia’s sending military supplies across the border, from OSCE video footage and UAV imagery, to photographs and satellite imagery showing vast quantities of ammo stockpiled in Russia-led eastern Ukraine. Both the Russia-led republics of Donetsk & Luhansk have never adequately explained where they get their ammo from and why after 6 years they seem to have an inexhaustible supply of it.

So as it stands our next campaign is likely to be one related to Russia’s occupation of eastern Ukraine, with the emphasis on ammo & military supplies. Afterwards we’ll return to #CrimeaIsUkraine. In the campaign lead up, my aim is to post numerous short videos on YouTube, blog articles here and create multiple info-graphics which people can use on the day to post on social media. Timescale for Campaign Day kick off is about 3 weeks time.

  1. I’ve read that Russia is now talking officially about sending weapons across the border. So an alternative to ammo would be weapons. Or let the ammo hashtag cover both. Which was probably your thought anyway.
