For Whom The Bell Tolls: Ukraine Remembers its Heroes

Everyday a bell tolls in Ukraine and everyday three soldiers fire a volley salute.
Each day in grounds of the Ministry of Defence in Kyiv, a simple, solemn ceremony is held. The names of the soldiers who died on this day in 2014 and the years since are read out. After their names are called, the bell tolls and a tribute volley is fired. The list of Ukrainian soldiers who have died since Russia’s 2014 invasion is long. Very long. Today the bell rang out 3 times. Yesterday Nov 17th it tolled 9 times, Nov 16th, 12 times. Twenty four lives lost. Twenty four lives lost defending democracy.

The image below shows families and soldiers paying tribute to their loved ones and former colleagues on Nov 16th. With the first winter snow upon the ground, the video covers todays ceremony (header pic also). It details 2 Ukrainian soldiers killed on this day in 2014 & Alla Yulianivna, a female soldier who died in 2015. Link to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence website for more info on todays events.
